How to Use an AED and Perform CPR
Quick Guide to Performing CPR (short and easy to understand):
1. Check the patient’s response
Call out loudly and gently shake the patient. If there is no response, no breathing, or only gasping, start CPR immediately.
2. Call for help
Dial 1669 or ask someone nearby to call for help.
3. Start chest compressions
Place one hand on top of the other at the center of the chest (on the sternum).
Push down about 5 cm (2 inches) at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute.
Allow the chest to fully recoil after each compression.
4. Give rescue breaths (if possible)
Open the airway (tilt head back, lift chin).
Pinch the nose and give 2 breaths into the mouth.
(If you are not trained or it is unsafe, perform chest compressions only.)
5. Continue
Keep performing CPR until the patient recovers or medical professionals arrive.
Easy to Remember: “Check – Call – Compress – Breathe”
Quick Guide to Using an AED (Automated External Defibrillator):
1. Turn on the AED
Press the power button and listen to the voice instructions from the device.
2. Attach the pads
Follow the diagram shown on the pads:
Pad 1: Upper right chest
Pad 2: Below the left armpit
3. Stay clear of the patient
Make sure no one is touching the patient.
4. Device analyzes heart rhythm
Wait and follow the device’s instructions.
5. If a shock is needed
The device will instruct you to press the “shock” button (some models deliver the shock automatically).
6. After shock or no shock
Immediately resume CPR for 2 minutes and continue following the device’s prompts.
Things to Remember:
– Use the AED as quickly as possible.
– Don’t be afraid! The device gives step-by-step voice instructions. Even if you’ve never used one before, it’s easy to follow.
